North Carolina Regions

Coastal Plain Region

Throughout history, the coastal regions of the globe have been major attractions. North Carolina's Coastal Region is no different. With its mild climate, this beautiful eastern region of the state entertains millions of guests all year. The main attraction of course is the Outer Banks where vacationers flock during all seasons of the year to enjoy the state's pristine beaches. The Outer Banks is a chain of barrier islands approximately 130 miles long. Remembering back to our history lessons you'll recall this is where the Wright Brothers took to flight back in 1903 in the town of Kitty Hawk.

Mountain Region

Experience North Carolina's Mountain Region where two of America's most visited national parks reside, where thousands of acres of national and state forestland sliced by rushing waters dominate the landscape, and where visits can relive the luxurious past of America's industrial birth. If you like motorcycle riding this region of NC offers the best riding roads in the US! The Appalachian mountain chain runs through the western part of the state in this region. By far the Blue Ridge Parkway, is a major attraction people from all over the world visit along with the Great Smoky Mountains where you'll find the tallest eastern US mountain, i.e. Mount Mitchell peaking out at 6,684 feet.

Piedmont Region

Located in the center of the state, this historically rich area once dominated by tobacco fields has been transformed into one of the East Coast's most dynamic new industrial mega centers. The greater Raleigh metropolitan including Research Triangle Park (RTP) is located in the middle of this region. Interstate 95 flows north and south through this region. It’s a simple 1.25 hour drive from the Raleigh – Triangle area to the beach in Wilmington and approximately 3 hours to the Outer Banks. This area is attracting many 1,000’s of new people every month from the north, south and western portions of the US.
If you're looking for sunshine this area has it with 210 days a year of wonderful sunshine.
