Durham is located halfway between the Great Smoky Mountains and the Carolina beaches. There are an abundance of restaurants, businesses, universities, world class medical facilities, home to many annual festivals, home of the Durham Bulls Triple-A baseball, etc. The original industries were tobacco and textiles shifted to shopping and the high-tech industry. With the birth of the Research Triangle Park (RTP) nearly 60 years ago Durham began to take on a new look that has evolved into a global center for information technology, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medicine. The City of Durham is known as the "City of Medicine," with healthcare as a major industry including more than 300 medical and health-related companies and medical practices. Duke University has grown into one of the most prestigious private universities in the world and its medical center ranks annually among the top in the nation. The university is the largest employer in Durham, providing jobs for more than 18,000 residents. By far the most visited attraction would be the Durham Bulls Athletic Park which is located in downtown Durham. The ballpark reflects many characteristics of old-time parks and the historic downtown Durham architecture. The ballpark’s most distinctive feature is the Bull that stands tall above the score board, this bull was used in the 1987 film, Bull Durham. Some of the more popular Dyrham communities are Bright Leaf, Chancellors Ridge, Duke Forest, Grove Park, Hope Valley Farms, Southampton, Treyburn, Woodcroft, and Woodlake. |
